A finish worth looking at closely.
A custom space is a series of relationships: a joint through the field, a niche in the wall, a threshold between rooms. These are the details to resolve before installation.

01 / The complete composition
Read the tile field and the fixed features together.

02 / A deliberate focal point
Give the feature wall its own layout conversation.

03 / The next surface
Review exterior product, assembly, and exposure requirements.

Custom Tile Installation Austin TX
Sun Tile Corporation is an Austin custom tile installation specialist for high-end residential projects — large-format porcelain, natural stone (marble, travertine, quartzite), and intricate mosaic patterns laid by experienced installers with meticulous precision. Custom tile installation cost depends on material and pattern complexity, so every project starts with a project-specific estimate after reviewing the scope. Family-owned since 1984, 75,000+ flooring installations company-wide. Free in-home estimate: (737) 704-3000.
Custom tile installation demands more than standard residential technique. Herringbone, chevron, basketweave, and one-off mosaic layouts require precise substrate leveling, meticulous dry-layout planning, and a steady hand on every cut. Our master installers bring the same craftsmanship to a single statement shower niche as they do to a whole-home tile package.
This page covers custom, design-led work. For standard tile installation in Austin — ceramic and porcelain floors, showers, and backsplashes with typical installed cost ranges — start with our tile guide instead, or see commercial flooring if the project is an office, retail space, restaurant, or multi-family community.
Custom Tile Installation Applications
We provide custom tile installation for architects, designers, and homeowners throughout Austin, Westlake Hills, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Bee Cave, Spicewood, and the Hill Country. Call (737) 704-3000 or request a free in-home estimate.
High-End Bathroom & Shower Tile Installation in Austin
High-end bathroom tile installation in Austin covers the primary suite floor, the shower enclosure, and the wet-area detailing that makes both last: continuous waterproofing behind the tile, a shower floor sloped properly to the drain, and floor tile chosen to stay safe underfoot when wet. Installed cost depends on material and pattern, so we provide a project-specific estimate after reviewing the scope and site details. Sun Tile has been installing them since 1984 — free in-home estimate at (737) 704-3000.
What separates a custom shower from a builder-grade one
The visible difference is the tile. The difference that shows up five years later is underneath it. A custom shower tile installation in Austin starts with a continuous, load-bearing waterproofing system — the pan is checked before a single tile goes down, rather than relying on the tile and grout alone to keep water out of the framing. The pan is pre-sloped so water reaches the drain instead of standing at the perimeter, curbs and benches are waterproofed as part of the same continuous assembly, and niches are framed, blocked, and waterproofed before layout — not cut in afterward.
Curbless and zero-threshold showers, increasingly specified in Austin custom homes for aging-in-place and for a cleaner architectural line, raise the stakes further: the slope has to be built into the subfloor rather than added on top of it, which means the framing decision happens months before the tile does. That is the single strongest argument for bringing your tile contractor into the conversation during design rather than at finish-out.
Large-format tile and stone slab walls
Large-format porcelain and stone — anything with an edge of 15 inches or longer — has become the default look for high-end Austin bathrooms because it puts far fewer grout lines in the room. It is also the least forgiving material to install: large-format tile needs a much flatter substrate than standard tile, so on most projects the real work is leveling the floor and floating the walls before setting begins. Skipping that step is what produces lippage — the ridge you can feel with a bare foot at the edge of each tile. Substrate flatness is measured and corrected as a separate scoped line item, and large-format tile is set for full, even coverage rather than relying on notch depth alone.
Choosing bathroom floor tile that is safe when wet
Not every beautiful tile belongs on a bathroom floor. Floor tile needs to stay steady underfoot when wet, and a polished marble or high-gloss porcelain that looks right on a wall will often fall short of it on the floor. The usual answer in a custom bath is a honed or textured finish underfoot with the polished material carried up the walls and into the shower surround, or a smaller mosaic on the shower floor whose extra grout joints add grip and let the tile follow the slope to the drain. We flag this at selection, before anything is ordered.
Natural stone in a wet room
Marble, travertine, and limestone are all calcareous — they etch on contact with acids, including several common bathroom cleaners, and they are porous enough to need regular sealing on a maintenance schedule rather than once at handover. They also want a white, non-staining setting mortar, because a standard gray thinset can telegraph through a light translucent stone. None of that rules stone out of a primary bath; it is specified in Austin custom homes constantly and it is worth it. It does mean the material decision and the maintenance conversation belong together, and we would rather have it with you at selection than at the walkthrough. Quartzite and the better large-format porcelains are the usual alternatives when a client wants the look with less upkeep — see the natural stone guide for how the materials compare.
Sun Tile installs high-end bathroom and shower tile for homeowners, custom builders, architects, and interior designers across Austin, Westlake Hills, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, Spicewood, Georgetown, Cedar Park, and Round Rock. For Builders & Designers
Becoming Your Flooring Trade Partner
Most custom builders do not re-bid flooring on every home. They keep a small stable of trade partners they can rely on — crews who show up when the schedule says so, communicate before a problem becomes a delay, and hold the same quality standard the builder puts their own name on. Sun Tile has held that position for Austin-area builders across four decades and two generations of ownership.
One point of contact
A dedicated project manager owns your account from the first site visit through final walkthrough — not a rotating dispatch desk. You always know who to call, and they already know your plans, your selections, and your schedule.
One accountable installation team
Our experienced installation crews handle your project directly. That means consistent quality across every home in your community and craftsmanship you can trace back to the crew that did the work.
On-site measurements and itemized proposals
We measure on site rather than working from plans alone, and provide itemized proposals broken out by area and material — formatted so you can walk your client through the numbers without rewriting them first.
Design collaboration before selections lock
We work directly with your architect and interior designer on material specification, transitions, layout, and pattern detailing — early enough that substitutions and lead times do not become a problem at install.
Custom Home Flooring Costs in Austin
Custom home flooring cost in Central Texas depends on the material, pattern complexity, substrate condition, and stone sealing needs — porcelain, travertine, marble, quartzite, and hardwood all price differently, and intricate patterns add labor. Rather than publish a range that may not fit your project, Sun Tile provides a free, itemized in-home estimate after reviewing the measurements, selected products, and installation scope.
