What separates a custom shower from a builder-grade one

The visible difference is the tile. The difference that shows up five years later is underneath it. A custom shower tile installation in Austin starts with a continuous, load-bearing waterproofing system — the pan is checked before a single tile goes down, rather than relying on the tile and grout alone to keep water out of the framing. The pan is pre-sloped so water reaches the drain instead of standing at the perimeter, curbs and benches are waterproofed as part of the same continuous assembly, and niches are framed, blocked, and waterproofed before layout — not cut in afterward.

Curbless and zero-threshold showers, increasingly specified in Austin custom homes for aging-in-place and for a cleaner architectural line, raise the stakes further: the slope has to be built into the subfloor rather than added on top of it, which means the framing decision happens months before the tile does. Floor tile needs to stay steady underfoot when wet, and a polished marble or high-gloss porcelain that looks right on a wall will often fall short of it on the floor. The usual answer in a custom bath is a honed or textured finish underfoot with the polished material carried up the walls and into the shower surround, or a smaller mosaic on the shower floor whose extra grout joints add grip and let the tile follow the slope to the drain. We flag this at selection, before anything is ordered.

Natural stone in a wet room

Marble, travertine, and limestone are all calcareous — they etch on contact with acids, including several common bathroom cleaners, and they are porous enough to need regular sealing on a maintenance schedule rather than once at handover. They also want a white, non-staining setting mortar, because a standard gray thinset can telegraph through a light translucent stone.
